Self-Defence[Zelfverdediging]

Or how things go wrong in most conversations about how to deal with early termination of pregnancy.

What is the topic?

When it comes to ‘abortion’, the conversation usually turns into whisper mode. There’s nothing wrong with that, and in any case it’s better than shouting, ranting, cursing, insulting. Abortion is certainly not a subject that you can broach as if it were a cake – do you want a piece of this pie?

Let me summarize what the most common opinions are in the US amongst the ProLife movement – I’ll take them as a reference because they are easy to harvest:

–              Abortion is murder

–              Life arises when the egg and sperm cell fuse together

–              If you get pregnant, it’s your fault

–              You should not have sex before you get married

–              If you become pregnant, father and mother share the responsibility for letting the child live

1/. – Abortion is murder. Is it really?

I think you will quickly get into trouble if you say this without a boo or bah. What is murder? Murder is the unlawful deliberate termination of the life of another person, in which an aggravating element is present. [Wikipedia] Does an embryo meet these criteria? Is it alive? Is it a clump of cells or does it have human features?

2/.- What  is not murder?

Killing in self-defense

If someone is killed on a whim, it is called manslaughter. [Wikipedia]

3/. I think I can add other qualifications: When does the life of an embryo begin?

  •  when cell division has progressed to the point where you can observe a heartbeat and implantation in the uterus has taken place (6 to 7 weeks) – there are no limbs yet and for the first time the embryo receives nutrients through the mother’s blood
  • From the eighth week onwards, an embryo becomes a fetus (this is usually the time limit for the abortion) A fetus begins to show all the characteristics of the adult stage
  • When could abortion be murder
    •  is the fetus older than 8 weeks
  • When is it not murder
    •  Are there extenuating circumstances?
    •  Is the fetus a result of rape
    •  The fetus is not viable
  • the fetus is a danger to the physical well-being of the mother
  • the child will not be able to live independently

We should not have laws for exceptional circumstances. The average judge will also rule fairly in normal circumstances and call on medical specialists if the circumstances are exceptional. Together they can come to a judgment, but they also have to listen to the mother’s wishes. And no further violation of professional secrecy

the father is

The father is informed if the mother wants it and when it is justified according to the experts. Let’s take into account the fact that many women can skip a period so that a period of almost 8 weeks can pass before you realise that you are pregnant.

And spontaneous abortions also usually happen before 12 weeks. Should we be strict and demand that spontaneous abortions be investigated to see if they were not provoked by the mother? But my position remains for the time being:

  •  The mother decides – men can’t imagine how heartbreaking (the choice for) an abortion can be it is not murder but legal self-defence when the mother’s physique cannot lead to a safe pregnancy or birth; or when the mother’s psychological suffering is so great that she will not be able to take care of the child
  •  Pregnancy is no laughing matter and men can’t imagine how hard the pregnancy is if the child has a genetic predisposition to an incurable disease – but not forced, only if the mother (and if necessary a father) are at the origin of this defect (or may occur in an earlier generation)
  •  Anyway – I don’t want to make a decision and I won’t say I know better – and I don’t want to force anyone to make a decision – to choose abortion. In the same way, you could draw a parallel with euthanasia – if the suffering becomes unbearable – then abortion should be possible.
  • There are also cases where a father forces the mother to have an abortion but the mother wants to carry and give birth to the child;
  • Similarly, many a father disappear into thin air when the mother-to-be announces the pregnancy. These are no exceptions.
  • And if half a million mothers allow themselves to be tortured in barbaric conditions by ‘angel makers’ and 10% of them die of complications – what is the real murder case?
  • Are those who cannot accept abortion under any circumstances and thereby send people to their deaths not the real murderers? Believe me, abortion is not a nice solution, … If men could get pregnant, our laws would look completely different.
  • But the majority of legislators are still men, and therefore the laws are usually misogynistic. My plea is that women should dictate the law, each for himself and no one for another.

Every woman is different and the influence of pregnancy on their feelings, thinking, considerations, fears, and so much more should not be underestimated.
